In Sri Lanka there are 14 Free Tread Zones around the country and about 250000 workers are earning their bread and butter on it . 80% of them are Women workers And most of them came from far away to find an employment. Our union called Free Tread Zones and General Services Employees Union member of a National Labour Advisory Council (NACL) which has a 25 years of heritage spread over the four main Zones of Katynayake , Biyagama , Koggalla . & Seethawaka and have a membership of around 16000 and the majority of its are women workers . we are the biggest union in the Free Tread Zone Sector and we make them aware to, organize , protest , and campaign to uplift the labor rights from last two decades not only the labour rights we always work as a team to establish the social dignity of the women workers and standing against the injustice and cruelty suffered by the poor women workers.
The very reason case was the Camila Dissanayaka women worker worked in the Katunayake FTZ rape and murdered by a doctor handled by us and up to now we were able to achieve lot of victories including the reinstatement of the only eye witness of the case who was working at Negambo hospital who sack by the cleaning services under the doctors influence. Not only that. In our long journey Tsunami became a mile stone for us the way we fulfill our social responsibilities by constructing 130 houses 03 Schools and provided, household goods and financial supports for the desperate victims by this disaster to stand their own legs with the support of our members as well as international community and this program was mainly focus for victim workers of southern and Eastern province .WE also partners of ILO Sri Lanka self employment project in Ampara District We are functioning having head office at Colombo with Zonal offices at in the vicinity Katynayake ,Biyagama & Koggalla Zones where we conduct our services including legal aid for our members as well as others.
